Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Telfair is a huge elementary school with 1200 students. Most of our students do not own books at home, and nearly all live in Pacoima, CA. Telfair has eleven second grade classes consisting of 20 students each. These 220 students greatly benefit from "read alouds." In second grade, we have a unit with fairy tales and nursery rhymes. Our English language learners (most of our population) would greatly benefit from hands-on experience utilizing flannel boards and stories. We will be forever grateful for any flannel boards and story boards relating to nursery rhymes and fairy tales. The fairy tale and nursery rhyme flannel stories will be utlized in a group setting (4-6 students at a time) to summarize and retell story text. These stories are always hands-on. The students will be able to sequence events orally, talk about the stories, and many other learning activities. From there, the students can utilize the "writer's workshop" to prepare pre-writing activities, to creat rough drafts, to revise, to edit, and to publish their work. These activities can go on for many stories and many weeks during the unit (6-8 weeks at a time). Since we have eleven classrooms, five sets of these stories will be shared.
