The students at my school are from a rural, farm community. We have a small school at the edge of our large corporation. Our students are coming from all socioeconomic backgrounds. We are lucky to have great families that work hard and are involved in our school events, but we don't get a lot of extra funding from the state. This is due to our school not qualifying as a Title I school, which are schools who have a higher level of free and reduced-price lunches than we currently have.
My sweet kiddos are hard workers, but have lots of extra energy and thrive during hands-on activities.
We move around our classroom a lot at different times of the day to help with this. I also have tried to incorporate a flexible seating environment to keep their little bodies wiggling while engaged in learning while at our seats. We have had a lot of success when we use hands-on manipulatives and activities!
My Project
This Storytelling Project will be a wonderful addition to not just my Kindergarten students, but allows for all grade levels at my small rural school to benefit! We are fortunate to have several iPads in each of our classrooms, but adding apps is very expensive and a responsibility of the classroom teachers to fund. We have added the basics, but would love to incorporate storytelling apps to help improve writing at our school and encourage ways to stimulate adding more details in their writing while using technology, which students love!
I have requested the Tiggly resources that would be used by our younger grade levels which all have a storytelling app featured in the set!
They not only have this at the reading level, but also in math and using shapes! The students will have many opportunities to include storytelling in many different aspects and across several subject areas.
All the students, especially the older kiddos would benefit from apps being purchased using App Store gift cards at their skill level by each grade level teacher. Apps, such as, Story Creator, My Story Book Creator, Little Story Creator, and many more where kids can use real pictures, create their own pictures, and even add their own voices. This Storytelling Project is something our whole school would benefit from and it would truly help us with expanding our creativity and using our imaginations to promote our learning and would be readily available on all of our school iPads!
