Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Once a child becomes a student in my classroom, they become "one of my kids" forever, and I try my best to keep up with them over the years. My students are low-income/high poverty, but when they are in my classroom they are first class travelers! It is my mission to make a positive impact on not only the students whom I teach, but every child I come in contact with.
Our school is centered in a large residential area of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The part of town the school is located in is referred to as the "Westside," which locals know to be a very tight-knit community. There is minimal turnover within our staff because of the "family" mentality within our school.
Throughout the year, I will have a handful or more of students who will unfortunately be part of a revolving door due to being in foster care or home eviction. Because of their low socioeconomic class status, our students are provided a free breakfast and lunch. Additionally, many students receive backpack program food. Despite the hardships they face, they are eager to learn and enjoy the experiences that take place within our classroom.
My Project
Children have the most amazing imaginations and the students in my class love using the flannel board and flannel pieces to tell stories. We use the flannel board along with a read aloud to add in an extra visual and give some of the students an opportunity to help tell the story.
The donations toward this project will help provide materials for my students to explore and enhance the mind.
The supplies such as the feely, fabric letters, lacing letters, and alphabet pocket chart requested will be used in my pre-k classroom to help build a greater understanding of letter formation and gives my students a chance to learn while being hands-on.
