I am a first grade regular education teacher at an high priority school in Fayetteville, North Carolina. We have about 96% free- or reduced-lunch students. My students enjoy learning and have fun participating and cooperating with others as well! In first grade I like to teach many lessons on the carpet. My students enjoy singing and doing centers or cooperative groups on the carpet. Instead of doing busy seatwork we usually spend most of our times in the morning on the carpet to do a variety of activities. Unfortunately in my classroom my carpet is about 10 years old, it's an ugly shade of yellow and the custodians refuse to clean it anymore because it sheds so much. Sometimes when my students sit down or play on the carpet you can pick off the yellow balls of fuzz that are on the students clothes and hair. This is why I am writing, my class would really appreciate a new carpet. It would make my classroom more inviting and a great place for the students to learn. I use the carpet throughout the year. We sing songs on the carpet, listen to story time and in cooperative groups. We practice math and science using manipulatives on the carpet. It is a place where they can feel relaxed and learn at the same time. We also do our guided and shared writing on the carpet because it in near my writing board. In closing, please help me to have a more happier relationship with my custodians. I know they would really appreciate a carpet that would not distroy their vaccumm cleaner. Also, my students will appreciate not having ghastly yellow fuzz balls on their clothes and hair. Even though my gold carpet will be missed because we have had some great times learning on it. I am sure it will enjoy the carpet heaven even more.
