My students are struggling readers in a small, rural community. About 50 percent of the children in our school are from low-income families. Our school has been fortunate enough so far to continue to meet in person this year.
I teach over 50 students each day in our reading intervention program.
These students mainly come from kindergarten through fourth grade. I also support the intervention instruction of hundreds of other second through sixth grade students as they work with paraprofessionals in our school.
Our intervention groups need stories and materials that will provide more engaging reading practice. Stories which are written to give repeated practice with specific phonics skills, though important for the students' progress, tend to be a little dry. As the writer focuses on using that phonics pattern as many times as possible in the passage, the storyline often suffers. These struggling students need more engaging stories which can still give them the practice they need to build their phonics knowledge.
My Project
I plan to use the TPT gift cards to purchase story passages that will provide my students with new reading material for putting their phonics lessons into practice. Students will be able to have their own folders with stories in sheet protectors inside. The students can then use dry erase markers to mark examples of the phonics pattern on which they are focusing. After reading the passage, the marks can be erased, and the students can reread the passage for more practice. If our school needs to transition to distance instruction in the future, the story passages can still be provided for the students' at-home learning.
These new stories will provide my students with reading material that they will be motivated to read again and again.
This will give them the extra practice they need as they solidify their learning of each phonics concept. As they become more familiar with the phonics patterns, their accuracy and fluency will improve, making reading more rewarding for these students.
