My kindergarten class consists of 31 English language learners with Spanish being their native language. They are eager to explore and create new ideas! During a full day of school, they listen to stories, sing, dance, practice printing, create drawings, listen to music, practice letter identification, sounds, and manipulate objects to count and/or create patterns. All of my students LOVE listening and responding to stories.
My students are a friendly bunch who enjoy working with both me and their new classmates.
They work in pairs and/or small groups and often share and cooperate with each other.
My Project
The headphones will allow all my kindergarteners to have multiple opportunities throughout the day to listen and enjoy many stories. It is a great way for students to explore and comprehend literature that may be above their reading level.
These experiences will help develop critical comprehension, listening and attention skills.
Research suggests that listening to stories strengthens literacy development and is an important element of becoming successful readers. This opportunity will also support my students literacy skills by improving their vocabulary, grammar and reading abilities supporting literacy all around. Developing adequate listening skills will also assist with increasing their attention span.
