Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a second-grade teacher, I am fortunate to witness the magic that happens when students listen to a story: They are transported to a different time and place and they use their imaginations to help shape a new world. I would like to expand the opportunities my students have to listen to stories by having personal cassette players available to them.
Personal cassette players would allow each student to listen to stories that meet his or her interest/reading level. Unlike in a group listening center situation, students would be able to make choices to meet their needs, rather than having to listen to a book that may not be at their level. This will be very helpful in meeting the individual comprehension, fluency, and phonics needs of all learners. Each student would have control over the player, so the story could be listened to as often as desired. Also, personal cassette recorders would enable our classroom to take greater advantage of the resources of the library, which often carries single tape/book combinations.
Our school serves a population where about 80% of the students receive free/reduced lunch. Many students live in homes where a language other than English is the primary language spoken. The cassette players could be taken home by students so that those living with family members with limited English language literacy would still be able to listen to stories in English, furthering their fluency and comprehension skills.
It would be wonderful to have a class supply of 20 personal cassette players, along with a supply of batteries (which I will gladly replenish as necessary). The players would be for both classroom and home use by all students in the class. Not only would they help with fluency, comprehension, and phonics, but they would also help to keep the story magic alive!
