Our urban elementary school draws from diverse surrounding neighborhoods in Salt Lake City. Our school community is made up of kind and caring families who support our students through active community and classroom volunteerism. Strong believers in Arts in Education is where most of our fundraising efforts go to support our fine arts programs.
I could not be more proud of my kind and caring students and of the learning environment they have created and work hard to promote each and every day.
Our classroom community is one of the things I am most proud of as a teacher. Our students have created an inclusive, supportive classroom in which they help each other to learn and grow.
My Project
Hands-on, cooperative learning engages my students and teaches them problem-solving skills. In today's world, adults must be able to work with others to reach a common goal. The classroom is no different and I am always looking for ways to integrate our core standards with meaningful lessons that have real-word application.
My students need two Kestrel weather meters to collect real time data for their science unit on weather and climate.
Using 3-D science standards, I create science lessons built around discovery. Students learn how to collect data, develop models, and read to obtain information. With new sixth grade science standards and the addition of weather and climate to our core, I'm working hard to design interesting and applicable lessons to help students understand weather events in our backyard and beyond.
The handheld Kestral devices will be just the tool to conveniently and accurately monitor local weather events. Two meters will allow for two small groups of students to experience the instrument and collect simultaneous data. The convenient size and portability of this instrument means we can bring it with us on field trips while studying ecosystems. Check out our picture from the Great Salt Lake!
