Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall. Students live in many areas of the city. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.
This year we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" where students can choose topics about refugees to research, explore & create.
My Project
Most students do not realize that there are more refugees today then ever before in history!
Some of our students are refugees or have family members who have been refugees.
All of our students have seen news stories about the refugees.
We will show two films to the students about the Lost Boys Of Sudan. Then we will use maps & other resources to create a timeline.
Students will be able to select from several books to read, research & discuss. They will share a short book talk & add information about their refugee story to the timeline.
Additionally we will offer two book clubs for students to read the books God Grew Tired of Us & The Red Pencil.
