My students need a lot of repetitive stories to learn how to speak as well as their peers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from various classrooms across three preschool campuses. I am a Speech Language Pathologist who provides response to intervention (RtI) services to general education preschool students. In order to qualify for preschool in my district, the student must be either bilingual or low socioeconomic status. We have many students who are English Language Learners from many different ethnic backgrounds.
These students are 4-5 years-old and exhibit difficulty with either their speech or language development.
These students come into preschool with poor fine motor and low home engagement. My class is the first step of intervention prior to a referral for special education.
Our districts goal is to catch children with concerns early to help them succeed rather than start with the most restrictive environment and label. My students receive this early intervention as well as parent training to help reach this goal. Impact on these students also leads to better language development for their siblings due to their modeling of language skills at home and improved parent involvement. So by helping one you will be helping many.
My Project
I am requesting various books I use with my groups. My students learn through story retell activities. We practice multiple goals through the use of good books. When I find an engaging book, students will often repeat story lines throughout the rest of the day and even come back a week later remembering what we talked about. Students can work on many skills at once with these books and activities that I pair with them.
When I use Rosie’s Walk, we practice the language skill of prepositional phrases as well as correctly articulating age appropriate sounds.
I include fun activities following the book, such as an obstacle course through the farm. Students learn new vocabulary with even the simplest books.
I use the book, The Carrot Seed, to coincide with science lessons they are using in the classroom. The simple pictures and text are a perfect way to elicit natural language from students. Moonbear’s Shadow is another book that directly aligns with our curriculum. My students love recreating the bear’s journey through the day.
I am requesting my own personal copies of these books so I will always have them on hand when I need them. I often share my lessons with my fellow Speech Language Pathologists, instructional assistants, and graduate students so your support would also impact their students as well. Thank you for considering my project and supporting all teachers.
