Stories Of Epic Proportions: Homer's The Odyssey

My students need 70 copies of Homer's "The Odyssey" for two Humanities classes studying ancient Greece and the basics of epic structure.

My Students

Life is an epic adventure, and our juniors and seniors are just preparing to embark on their own individual journeys. What better way to prepare for their own odysseys than to study the original epic journey, Homer's "The Odyssey."

Our school and district are facing serious financial struggles than will only be compounded next year due to continued state shortfalls, to the point that we can't replace textbooks that are literally falling apart.

Despite these issues, our school continues to provide a powerful educational experience for our students. These students reflect a shifting demographic, but a consistent direction; we pride ourselves on how well we prepare our students for success in college and beyond.

My Project

We are coping with our financial difficulties and textbook shortfalls by moving as much of our content as we can online, but there is no substitute for a book in the hand, particularly when reading something as challenging as "The Odyssey." Fitzgerald's translation is not just a "retelling" or summary, as many versions are, but a true poetic translation that keeps the flavor and style of the original, but is still accessible to readers of various levels. This poem will offer our students an introduction to epic structure, be an opportunity to analyze a classic piece of literature for a variety of literary elements and devices, provide insight into our cultural study of ancient Greece, and allow us opportunities to make personal connections to our personal journeys and the "epic adventures" our students will soon be embarking upon as they prepare to head off for college.

The idea of the odyssey is at the very root of Western, and particularly American, cultural identity.

We do our students a disservice if we do not help them understand the nature of the journey, its wonders and its consequences. Homer's Odyssey is just one step in a year of cultural exploration and student preparation for their own "epic" adventures.
