Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English Language Learners who have moved here from countries such as Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cape Verde, Guatemala, Sierra Leone, Lebanon and Cambodia. They appreciate the diversity of our classroom and our school. They also are respectful of the sacrifices and hardships that are part of their shared histories.
Our community of English Learners love to know one another's stories.
We are interested in what is common among us and we respect differences of languages, cultures and experiences. We share a common goal to be leaders and thinkers in a loving and supportive school community.
My Project
Visiting performers will teach the art of storytelling through modeling and interactive workshops. They will prepare the students to tell a two to four minute personal story by the end of the 6 day unit. Students will include elements of effective narrative including: sensory details, beginning and end and main take-away. We will also practice nonverbal tools of storytelling: facial expressions, voice and movement.
With the Stories Live curriculum, we will speak about common themes such as Up the Family Tree, Where I am From, Learned the Hard Way and others.
We laugh together, give praise and support and sometimes, cry. Students take pride in being able to tell their story to a live audience and teach meaningful lessons from their own experiences. Themes are aligned to the Common App essay prompts and will help students compose effective college essays.
