My students need a larger selection of books for my classroom library. With the items on this list, I hope to greatly improve the number of books, and subjects, they can choose from.
My school is a Title I school, so more than half of the student population is eligible for free or reduced lunch. My students also come from a range of racial and socioeconomic backgrounds; we have a large Native American population, and we also have a growing number of Burmese immigrants and Hispanic students. My school is an exciting place to be right now because our population has doubled in the last 5 years.
Although change is a great thing, it also means that we have a greater need for more resources.
The materials you help to buy now will be used by countless students as our district continues to grow. I have seen many students who identify as reluctant readers grow an appreciation for reading even with my modest library. My students have a great passion for learning new things, and I hope to help steer them in the right direction.
My Project
The biggest impact I have seen in my class this past year is an increased interest in books based on various subject interests. With the addition of the books in this project, I will continue expanding on my slowly growing classroom library and make interesting books readily available for my students, especially reluctant readers. I have collected titles from book-loving students to attempt to gather the widest variety of titles I can. I plan to continuously add titles to my library each year as a teacher.
I believe an eclectic book variety is essential to a successful educational setting.
Whether students are already avid readers, curious about a title, or just plain bored, having a large collection of books directly in front of them holds the potential to grab students' attention and get them hooked for life. All it takes is one good book to turn a "non-reader" into a lifelong reader.
