Our students are hungry to learn about the world. We want them to have access to many perspectives as they learn to become global citizens.
Over the course of just this year, this library will support 600 students who take our new world geography course.
Our students and their families come from all around the world; together, they can speak over 100 languages. Our students, 70% of whom live in poverty, are kind and thoughtful young people, committed learners, and hard workers.
My Project
These books will support the creation of a robust classroom library of fiction material that tells stories and teaches perspective about a variety of global issues and cultures. Our new world geography courses focuses on issues such as climate change, population, and peace and conflict. We will pay special attention to Africa, the Middle East, India, China, and Latin America. These stories, many of which are about teenagers, will supplement the nonfiction material we will read in class and provide ways to extend learning and ignite passion.
Currently, our classroom library is minimal.
We have not had the resources to purchase any new materials. We know our students LOVE to read; fiction provides a unique window and access point to global cultures and issues. For many students, this will be their first opportunity to take a social studies class in middle school. In a nonfiction-heavy geography class, we know that it could be the novel they read that makes a student think, "Wow!", "I get it!", or "What can I do about it?"
