This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My kindergartners come from a low socioeconomic background. Even though this is on their back, they are the most loving and hard working 5 and 6-year-olds. Being a teacher, I don’t have much to give financially, and I want my students to grow and thrive as much as they can. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom.
These students come from tough situations and despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
My Project
My students need exposure to books of all levels and interests. I have students who are just beginning to read and other who are fluent and need a challenge. Being able to supply a variety of books would help to engage all of them on this reading journey. My students also need a comfortable rug to sit on while they read. Space in the classroom is limited, and the cold hard chairs that are provided for us just aren't comfy. They need a space where they can stretch out and just be kids.
Reading will allow my students to travel outside the walls of the classroom an experience adventure beyond their wildest dreams.
Having both fiction and non-fiction selections will help my students explore new interests and become fluent readers. Reading is fundamental to learning. With these book selections, my students will be on the road to becoming successful lifelong readers.
