Help me give my students age-appropriate literature for the music classroom to learn about the types of instruments, different musical genres, and famous musicians.
Specialist teachers have a unique job, in that we get to teach all students in the building. Over the course of four years, I get to watch these children mature, grow, and bloom. Our school environment is one where students are challenged and encouraged to do their best learning, with the support of their teachers and peers.
I have found that students learn best when they are in a fun, safe, and supportive learning environment.
In the course of one week, all 450 students attend music class. My students are kind, comical, and caring, and fully engaged with our music learning. They are eager to show off any musical skills they are learning outside of school and love to perform music for others.
My Project
I want to expand the music classroom library to allow students to broaden their musical knowledge while fostering a love of reading. By providing students with a variety of books (picture books, sound stories, biographies) students will have the opportunity to read about topics we might not get a chance to cover during the school year. They can choose books that interest them and that are at an accessible reading level.
Read, sing, play!
I plan to use these books in several ways. Students will be able to choose a book to read independently when they have completed their assignments. Some books will be loaned out to students, and some will remain the classroom. I plan to build Standards-based instrumental lesson plans around many of the books to incorporate music curriculum topics like rhythmic notation, composition, and performance.
My students love to sing and love to play instruments. Connecting visuals to music, and music to literacy, will allow me to reach all learners in a new engaging ways.
