I teach a very diverse group of twenty-four 5th graders at a public K-5 elementary school in the Silicon Valley of California. My students have a variety of linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Over 50% of our students are English learners, and more than a third come from low-income families.
My job is to help prepare students for success in middle school and beyond as they reach their personal and educational goals.
We are becoming lifelong learners and contributing members of society who think critically and are constantly problem solving. Each year is a new adventure, and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to learn alongside such amazing young people!
My Project
At the end of the last school year, my 5th grade classroom was very fortunate to receive new desks. They are modern-shaped and awesome, but have one huge limitation...there is VERY little storage space in which to put students' books, folders, and writing implements. Instead of the large metal storage systems that our old desks had, we now have small wire trays beneath our writing surfaces. What results from the lack of space is books and other items piled all over the tops of desks. Additionally, our old turn-in trays are decades old, flimsy, and cracked after years of use. Students use them multiple times a day, and need something more well-made and kid-friendly. Our class routine is to sign work in on a clipboard roster when submitted into these trays.
New large book boxes, paper turn-in trays, and clipboards will streamline and organize our classroom.
Students will have a convenient place to store their textbooks, binders, folders, and workbooks. They will have a sturdy and obvious place to turn in completed assignments when they are done with their work.
I am hopeful to start the new school year with a classroom ready for students to feel organized and prepared to learn. Thank you for your consideration in supporting my 5th graders!
