Our school is located on a military base, with most students being dependents of US Navy personnel. Teaching dependents of military service members mean our classrooms are like revolving doors throughout the school year. These families constantly have to move or continue with every day life with an integral member of their household gone on deployment or detachments. Although it never gets easier whatever age one might be, for kindergartners its even harder. Kindergarten is often the first school experience for many of these students. For every new student I get, and the ones I have the pleasure of teaching all year, I try to keep some form of structure in their lives for the times that there may not be.
My Project
As kindergarten students they keep pretty busy; composing stories in their writing journals, solving problems on their white boards, practicing sight words, and reading books. The problem is they have nowhere to store all the important supplies they need in order to learn. They work at tables to collaborate with partners, which is great, but lacks the storage a desk has to offer. This storage shelf will give each student a place to put all their essential learning supplies. Now their books, journals, and folders will all have a home to offer storage and organization to each of my students. Having this storage unit and containers will help keep my students organized and give them more ownership in their learning. They will be able to access and maintain essential learning supplies to help them grow. No longer will they need to search and seek out supplies and tools. They will all be located in their trays.
