I have 25 wonderful, energetic, and curious first-grade students. The students in my classroom speak a variety of languages, eight total. My school is 88% free or reduced price lunch, and that percentage is quickly rising. Forty-nine percent of the students at my school identify as Asian, 26% identify as African American, 14% identify as Hispanic, 10% identify as Caucasian, and 1% identify as American Indian. My classroom is rich with diversity, and we celebrate each student's identity and culture.
My students are always moving.
I use alternative seating, center-based learning, and differentiation to target the needs of all of my students.
In my school, the classrooms are co-taught and have a cluster of students who are just learning English or have special needs. I teach in special education co-taught classroom. I am passionate about teaching to the needs of each of my students. I do not believe in a "cookie cutter" approach and often have each student working on something different at the same time which creates a need for more supplies!
My Project
Have you ever walked into a 6 or 7 year old's room? What does it look like? Now imagine sharing a room with 26, 6 and 7 year olds!
We need these photo boxes to store the math centers we use every day and the bench to store materials we use while learning on the carpet!
The bench will also give students another option for sitting if they do not like sitting on the carpet.
These storage materials will make math time so much less stressful! We use math centers each day and they change once a week. Based on student ability the kids have different activities on which they are working. That means we could have five for six different activities going on each day which equals a lot of paper! With the storage for the centers the students will know exactly where to get their materials and keep their teacher happy so I'm not recopying and laminating lost supplies.
The storage bench will store supplies like whiteboards, markers, and erasers that we use for learning on the carpet. It will also give students a place to sit that do not like sitting on the carpet.
