This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in an economically challenged community. Working with students at my school is challenging and rewarding, all at the same time. In the 5th grade, most students haven't had much experience with science yet. They may have learned some very basic skills, but they haven't really done experiments or seen demonstrations. This is unfortunate, but it is a reality.
I love to surprise my class with each project, experiment, or demonstration because when they make the connection between learning science and life, it is rewarding all in itself!
My students are bright and eager to learn all about anything I teach. I am very happy to say I work with them.
My Project
Because Hurricane Harvey has destroyed so much of our community (including our school), my students and I have had a challenging school year. We are working hard to keep our expectations high, and yet we need so much still. Our district has been split up between sister schools in order to accommodate our large population.
Luckily, my grade level has just been told we will now all move to portable buildings until a permanent decision can be made as to when we will have a school home.
While we welcome the next move, we also know this means needing some additional items, such as storage cabinets to safely and securely store our learning stations and other supplies.
