My Students

All of my students are wonderful children who are diagnosed with emotional disabilities, which affects their behavior, social skills, and access to academics. They are making progress, but continue to need support to help them manage their feelings and behavior, to maintain a calm demeanor while they try to navigate through their school day to learn. Often, they are easily frustrated during routine academic demands, miscues during social interactions, and internal stimuli they are often unable to express their feelings verbally and need support to move past a problem.

Ninety percent of my students are from low-income households and all of my students are receiving a free lunch: several of my students also have a dual diagnosis of autism, health, and or developmental delay, or are English language learners, which further hinders their academic, emotional, behavioral, and social growth, and they have needs that cannot be met in the regular education classroom.

It takes a lot of consistent effort, creativity and patience to help my students to feel safe in their surroundings, and with each other. This year has been tough with everyone being new to our classroom...and now the Coronavirus disrupted any further opportunities to bond as a classroom.

My Project

We have recently received funding for food items for our classroom students. Our school's cafeteria is not opening due to Covid 19 and our students in the classroom and remotely will be receiving bagged breakfasts and lunches each day, which means they will not have a choice of lunches, a variety, or any hot lunches. With the food items we are receiving, along with items that I will purchase, we will be able to provide our students with breakfast, lunch and snack choices that they would otherwise not have. Which will insure that they are all having something nutritious to eat each day.

I know my emotional/behaviorally disabled students and they will struggle with not having a choice and I want to make sure that they will remain in a calm state and will eat something that is provided: Having been funded, I then realized that I don't have anywhere to safely store these food items that will be provided for my students in class and at home throughout the entirety of the school year.

Last winter we had a mouse problem, which was immediately taken care of, however we have not been in the school building since spring, so we do not know if the mice will come back once food is available in the schools again. Especially since we will be eating all our meals in our classroom; we will have to be very diligent in keeping the room clean and free of crumbs. Also, I had kept food items in plastic storage bins in the past and they crack and break with frequent use. I know that if we are able to get this storage cabinet for our classroom we will take great care of it and will use it for years to come!
