This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from a variety of cultures. Their personalities are as rich and as unique as their native languages and backgrounds.

As a school counselor, it is my job to make sure my students feel safe and have the ability things to get things they need by having essential school items organized.

Unfortunately, many of my students have experienced some degree of trauma within their lives. Many of my students, therefore, experience high levels of anxiety. Additionally, many also are living either at, or below, the poverty line. Serving a population with high-levels of trauma and poverty (100% of our students are eligible to receive free lunch) brings with it its own challenges. First and foremost, each of my students needs to be validated- for who they are and what they have to offer (which is a lot!). Next, they need to feel safe, nurtured, and protected. They need to be able to trust that I will meet their needs- educationally and emotionally.

I’d love for there to be essential organization items such cabinet baskets, drawer organizers for their school supplies, magnets so that the students can access things more quickly. In addition, I would like to continue to create a safe space by adding fairy lights and human emotions sign along with other items.

I truly believe that by adding a symmetry and organization, my most at-risk students will feel safe and comfortable enough to take the chances that they weren’t able to take in the past. This is my ultimate goal! I want to create a safe space, in which they can learn and grow!
