I teach in a very rural school. We have a large percentage of students on free or reduced lunch. We are improving our science standardized test scores but had several scores below basic last year. I feel that students are in need of hands-on projects to help them remember science concepts. Therefore, we need stopwatches for my class. One of the projects that we do in correlation with state standards is to make different cars to see the effects on movement when the weight or design of the car has been altered. We want to graph the speeds of our car to pick the best design to use. After several weeks of testing and recording data, we have a race to see the fastest car in class. I teach 76 students, and we have six stopwatches that do not work. I feel that in order for this project to have meaning for ALL students, every student needs a stopwatch during this project. I need a class set (at least 30 due to mainstreaming with special education).
