What do you do when you have students afraid to come to school because of how they are treated when they're there? What do you do when fights break out because of something derogatory someone put on Facebook or tweeted? Well, we are going to combat bullying by educating our students!
I teach at a high poverty school in rural central Georgia.
Many times we believe that the real world would never touch us; that we'd never be affected by the perils faced by the big city schools. However, bullying exists everywhere. Even amongst our kids, who are really good kids that get caught up in bad situations. Our kids have high aspirations but sometimes cave in to negative peer pressure. Our goal is to create a wave of positive peer pressure to create change.
A group of my students came together to brainstorm ideas on how to combat bullying in our school. They decided to create "Bully-Free Zones" around the school to bring attention to the trend. The students are going to make signs, print pamphlets on bullying and spread the word on the dangers of bullying. In order to create the signs, my students need markers, pens and a pencil sharpener for our colored pencils. For the pamphlets, they need laser toner for our laser printer to print professional looking literature. We are also requesting books on bullying to increase our awareness to know exactly what we are combating. They hope to increase awareness so that their peers know exactly what is and is not acceptable behavior.
Our project is important because it will help curb the growing trend of bullying.
We want to do something before we have a student pay the ultimate price of being bullied. We want to save our students from becoming another statistic. We will begin with a small group spreading the word with hopes that soon the entire school will be on the bully-free bandwagon.
