This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Research shows that reading five to ten books during the summer can stop reading loss among students.
Kindergarten to 2nd grade are the foundational years for literacy. The reading skills you obtain in K-2 can make or break a student's future academic growth.
I teach 27 amazing second grade students in a low-income New Orleans community slowly rebuilding itself post-Katrina.
My students attend a public charter school that aims to combine joy and rigor in the classroom.
While most of our students are too young to remember Hurricane Katrina, many of their families were significantly affected by the disaster that took place just nine years ago.
Despite their obstacles, my students are extremely motivated and hard-working individuals. In fact, while summer is just a few months away some are already reading at 3rd grade levels!
Unfortunately, most of my students do not own books of their own.
My Project
My students have learned to love reading and books, yet, this summer they will have access to few if any! Without the ability to practice reading, my students could see their literacy success slip away.
I am currently coordinating a summer reading program to curb this "summer slippage." Its mission is to promote my students' excitement and comfort with books, as well as, sustain their current reading levels. In order for this program to succeed, however, my students will need to practice reading and in order to practice, my students will need a personal library.
My students are a part of an inclusive classroom which combines students with special needs and general education students, therefore, I am requesting various titles for each student that range in leveled ability in order to differentiate for each student's needs. If each student is given access to these materials and the opportunity to read this summer they will enter second grade on-level and ready for a successful year!
Your help will make it possible for a team of 27 second graders to not only fight the "summer slippage" that so many students face, but also set them up for academic success for years to come!
