My Students

My students, as 5th and 6th graders in their own school, are at a unique level. They are in transition from multiple schools across the district, and are working to figure out their "place" within the new social dynamics. We are a Title I school, which means that our school serves a large number of low income students. My students come from various socioeconomic backgrounds and at-home challenges.

My students are in a period of great growth and vulnerability, and really need art to create a break from the social stress of their middle school years.

In the art room, my students are kind, creative, and eager to take on new artistic challenges. They are excited to explore new tools, techniques, and materials, and cannot wait to begin when I introduce a new lesson. I am really hopeful to bring new, quality materials to enrich their art experience.

My Project

Printmaking has always been one of my favorite projects to teach, as it captivates students in the process. However, most printmaking techniques involve a lot of waste with either rubber or styrofoam plates. Gelli plates will last for years to come as students may create, print, and wipe anew.

Gelli plates encourage risk taking in the art room by allowing students to find value in the creative process, and get a little messy without worrying about the product.

So often, students are afraid to make a mark on their paper-- they are struck with fear that they will mess up before they even begin. With Gelli plates, they can explore materials in a new way, building upon their printed layers and not worry so much about that first mark.
