My students need social emotional games, books and sensory items. These items help students work through anxiety, Autism, behavior difficulties, and other challenges to help them become successful functioning students.
Our school consists of students from PreK-5th grade. We are a community of diverse learners with Special Education, ELL, and high poverty students learning together in each classroom.
My Special Education students along with the other students in the school, have difficulties being able to focus on learning and filter out the overwhelming social and emotional struggles they have to overcome daily.
Giving my Special Education students and the other students in the school the opportunity to overcome their struggles, will allow them to be successful in their learning skills, social skills, collaboration skills and maintain focus amongst their peers.
My Project
The many diverse students at my school need social emotional games,books, and sensory items to help our young students learn how to cope when they struggle with their feelings. These items will help them sort out their mixed up feelings when they are unable to control themselves in the classroom. Offering games like Stop, Relax, and Think Game, My Feelings Game, Mad Dragon-an angry control card game, Emotion-oes Board Game, and Social Skills Board Game to younger students will help them open up to our school Counselor when they are unable to express themselves.
This project will immensely improve the social and emotional struggles young students go through on a daily basis, not just my Special Needs students, but all students who struggle at our elementary school.
Reading a book like, "But it's Not My Fault", "What if Everybody Did That", "I Just Want to do it My Way", and "My Mouth is a Volcano" to Kindergarten students about their different struggles will help them relate to the characters in the books.
Along with games and books, being able to offer sensory items like Kinetic Sand, Theraputty, stress balls, and stretch strings will help students keep outbursts and/or behaviors to a minimum while increasing their focus and learning during instruction time.
With less social emotional behavioral issues, instruction time increases and therefore the students will be successful and love learning in school.
