I teach a self-contained special education classroom where students have a wide range of abilities and disabilities. All of my students are classified with a developmental or cognitive disability, but that does not prevent them from doing their best. I teach at a Title I school in Tennessee where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch under Community Eligibility Provision.
My students are in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade, and spend many years with me so I really get to know what they need to perform their best learning.
We use a modified curriculum that teaches grade level content at their level of understanding.
My Project
My students may struggle with reading and math; but they have great imaginations and love to tell what they are doing when they have playtime with Legos and building materials. They plan dramatic scenes with blocks and play people and act them out. Recording their stories and sharing them digitally is the next step in their evolution combining play, technology, language and even engineering.
When I saw this challenge for digital storytellers offered by AT&T, I knew this was something my students would excel in and will give them a great opportunity to use technology to tell their stories.
Digital storytelling will encourage them to use their speech and communication skills as they tell the story, or they can simply have the dramatic music play in the background. We can expand their learning by having them draw and write as they plan what they want to make the movie about.
The Lego and Minecraft kits will give us a starting place to teach us how to use the stop animation to tell our stories digitally. We can use several of our own manipulatives as their imaginations take them to new stories to tell.
The iPad will be the way we record our digital stories and need a protective case. The radio will give the stories more pizzazz and make them more exciting to create and watch. Look out world - you might just see some of our videos on YouTube someday soon.
