I grew up hearing the phrase “Never Again?and I truly believed that the world community would never again allow genocide to happen. Unfortunately, that has not been the case. I decided that I could at least do my part to make this statement a reality.
I went to my principal and asked if I could teach a seminar on genocide. We decided to title the course “Genocide and Resilience?and to offer it each fall.
I teach at an alternative high school in Chicago. My students range in age from 16-20 and have dropped out of high school and decided to return. They are mostly African-American and Latino. My students are the face of resilience as they have all overcome obstacles to be in school. They are not, however, empathetic or worldly. This course has opened up a whole new world for them.
All of a sudden, my urban students are feeling a connection to the Armenians, Eastern European Jews and Rwandans. They are bringing me articles about Darfur and asking what they can do.
I have found that one of the best ways to help students make these connections is through film. It is for this reason that I would like to build a DVD library for this class. I want to purchase films about the Cambodian genocide, Armenian genocide, Rwandan genocide, the Holocaust, and the Serbian-Bosnian war.
Please help me, through the power film, to change the world!
