My Students
My students are an energetic, diverse, and hard-working group who are involved in all aspects of high-school life. They are athletes, musicians, and volunteers. With recent budget cuts, our school can barely afford the paper it needs to run for the year. Our school is a low-income school, and the challenges facing these students have an impact, but don't keep them from wanting to engage in innovative topics and be successful in the classroom. I want to engage them in current themes in literature, but books are expensive.
My Project
After our success with reading "All American Boys," we decided to incorporate more current and culturally relevant books to the classroom for our students to enjoy. "Runner" is about a boy trying to survive homelessness and hunger by grabbing onto opportunities around him.
"Runner" addresses the current living situations of many of our diverse students, and does so in an exciting way that draws readers in.
Our students will be excited to take on another novel and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment when they complete another class and personal goal.
This story will spark lively and authentic within our classroom and around the school. Many teachers came asking to borrow our last book, All American Boys, that was funded by DonorsChoose.org, because students were raving about it all over campus.
