Help me give my students an engaging book club experience! In this project there are various books for students to read, along with flexible seating (balance ball chairs) and tools to use to meet with their groups.
I am a first year teacher in a fifth grade class at a Title I Restart school in New Bern, North Carolina. Students in my school and the surrounding area were impacted from Hurricane Florence in September, leaving over half of the students displaced from their homes. The students in the school and my class come from various backgrounds and ethnic groups. Many students in the class are also part of English-Second-Language program.
Having positive relationships between teachers and students is emphasized at my school, and is one of my favorite parts of teaching.
I love being able to help my students overcome obstacles, or sharing the good and bad parts of their days.
My Project
There are three main components to my project. The first component is the actual books my students would read for book clubs. I selected the books in the project based on student interests, their backgrounds, and chose high-quality, award-winning texts. In my class, I give students a choice of which book to read to ensure that they are engaged and interested in what they are reading.
Engagement is crucial to student success.
The second component of my project ensures that students are channeling their energy towards productivity. Many students in my class have difficulty concentrating or focusing, and some students have ADHD. Flexible seating options, such as inflatable balance balls, can be used around the room to allow students a break from sitting in their normal seats. The chairs allow students to channel physical energy by maintaining balance and posture while they read and work. In my project, there are also sensory fidget toys for my students. I have found that many of my students are able to work well when they have an item to fidget with, but can often distract their peers with their fidget tools. This project includes a silent fidget tool for each student, to ensure that students are treated equally and fairly. The tools will allow students to silently fidget while they focus on their work.
The third component of the project helps students complete their work when they have finished reading their book club books. I enjoy allowing students to work around the room, but do not have the necessary materials, such as clip boards, to do this with written work. A class set of clip boards will allow students to complete their reading responses with their book club groups while using the various flexible seating options.
