Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Social, inquisitive, and determined are a few words that describe my 4th-grade students. My school services predominantly African American students. We currently have a 75% free and reduced lunch population.

Although my students typically come from a lower economic status, this hurdle doesn't stop them from putting their best foot forward daily.

When students walk into my room they know they are safe; safe to take risks and safe to be themselves.

We are not your typical neighborhood school. My school is an environmental magnet that services students all over the city. Our school setting is on 39 acres of land. My school allows students to see green space they may not necessarily see in their own neighborhood.

My Project

I want to implement Flexible Seating in my classroom for the upcoming school year. Flexible seating has immediate benefits such as burning calories, using up excess energy, increased motivation/engagement, creates better oxygen flow to the brain, and improves core strength/posture.

Students that are empowered by the opportunity to have choices perform higher academically.

Flexible Seating is an approach that will drive my instruction. Students will take ownership over their learning. Students will be more apt to share ideas in a comfortable work space.

The world in which we live is changing, so that means my classroom needs some updating as well.
