My students need a rug for our classroom. This rug is needed for a whole group lesson and for classroom community activities. This rug has a square for each student - giving each student enough space.
I am a first grade teacher with 22 first graders! I teach in a suburban/rural community that has quite a few low-income students in the school coming from various backgrounds and broken homes. In my classroom, I aspire to help my students feel loved and safe in order for them to learn.
The students in my classroom come from all walks of life - well off, struggling, family oriented, broken, motivated, careless, focused, or distracted.
By creating a student-centered classroom to meet each of their needs, I hope to create stronger community within the classroom. I know so many of my students come from broken homes or have already had difficulties in their young lives, so it is my goal to help my kids feel loved, safe, and know we are a family in my class.
My Project
The rug is a staple in elementary classrooms - especially for the younger grades - because this is where all the learning happens. I want my students to feel comfortable as they learn. Currently, my students would have to sit on the floor for our whole group lesson which often results in distractions and complaining that "this is too uncomfortable!" By adding a large carpet in my classroom, it will help students be comfortable and stay focused during our lessons and other classroom activities! Each student would be able to comfortably sit in his/her own square without having another student too close. This will allow students to learn the lesson at the carpet, collaborate with a shoulder partner, and see the board effectively.
This rug will also allow for us to grow in our classroom community, which will help students feel loved, safe, and heard.
By creating a "family feel" in the classroom, it will allow my students to feel safe and loved while at school, resulting in higher classroom achievement and understanding. Many students come from broken homes or other struggles, and I want each of my students to know that we are a team and a family in my classroom. I want to focus on building our classroom community each day by asking and answering questions and doing community building activities. This rug will allow us to come together as a group and share and truly get to know one another and learn together each day.
