Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Bullying is an epidemic in this country. Each and every day teachers stand witness to this, and I am ready to do something about it.
My students attend a public K-8 school in Harlem in the heart of New York City.
My school is 99% free lunch which means that most students are within the poverty level. My school has just recently added the middle school to the building, so we do lack some resources for teens. My students are creative and enthusiastic about reading, but their bodies and lives are changing rapidly at this point in their lives and they need some guidance!
My Project
I am requesting books such as " Bystander" and " The Fault in our Stars" which will not only engage my students in reading, but also show them strategies for dealing with bullying in Middle School. These books tackle bullying and other issues head on, honestly portraying characters which may be going through the same thing that my students are. I believe that my students will not only improve their reading levels, but also their problem solving skills with these books.
Often Middle School students are overlooked.
There are many programs for manners in Elementary School as well as bullying programs in High Schools. Yet, bullying is most prevalent during the Middle School years. My students are going through many physical and emotional changes and could really use help navigating the world around them as they continue to grow.
