My Students

Learning is not a spectator sport in our classroom! We strive for innovation and creativity in our thinking. Allowing students to use stop-motion animation to explain key concepts and standards, encourages students to feel empowered in their own learning which is a key to scholastic success.

Our California public school was founded on the belief that with rigorous and relevant teaching we can inspire and ensure learning so that each student develops the knowledge, skills, and confidence to achieve success in the 21st century.

Our population is extremely multi-cultural and serves students in high socio-economic areas as well as students who are receiving financial assistance. As with many schools in our state, our funding has been cut repeatedly for many years and budgets do not allow much room for purchases beyond the necessities. Yet the students' drive and determination to learn everything continues to grow.

My Project

I recognize that students do not learn alike just as students do not look alike. I strive to provide an opportunity to explore and interact with a variety of learning activities. The three most common types of learners are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Creating stop-motion animation videos appeals to all three. After recently learning about contractions in our 2nd grade classroom, students designed stop-motion animation videos to creatively show words coming together, letters dropping off, and apostrophes entering the picture. The benefit? Everyone in our classroom understands what a contraction is and how they are made. The downside? Filming took weeks of time using one camera and one tripod with 28 students. With 3 more cameras and 3 more tripods, we could finish a project in time to move onto others: multi-digit borrowing and subtraction in math or metamorphosis in science for example.

Stop-motion animation has been proven in my classroom to be a motivating and inspiring activity that ensures learning in all students.

It can be used both to introduce and to review important standards across all curricular areas. This empowered learning continues beyond our classroom walls as the students share their videos with peers in a variety of grade levels and with proud family members at home.
