My students greet me at the door with a smile on their face, a secret handshake we've created together, and a positive attitude about the fun and exciting day we are going to have while learning in our classroom. I set the tone of excitement, and I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.
I teach at a public school in rural Illinois, where students come from many different backgrounds and walks-of-life.
Many of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and/or special backpack food on the weekend. Our district also works closely with our community food pantry for a lot of our families. Despite these hardships, my students are willing and eager to learn, and they always try their best. They want to be in school because they want to grow and learn all they can in order to be successful in their future.
My Project
As you can see from my classroom picture, we are crammed in the classroom with too many desks! The students have a hard time focusing and getting work done, there is little room to walk around and navigate through the room, and there is nowhere for students to collaborate. The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students already have a "home." In other words, I know exactly where everything will go, and how it will be used. We just need your help in getting everything through our door! The large carpet will be placed in the front of the classroom and used as a gathering place during mini-lessons and share time. This will help increase collaboration and sharing tremendously! The yoga mats, cushions, chairs, stools, clipboards, and lap desks will be offered to students, so they may work where they are comfortable.
The donations to this project will help to increase engagement, productivity, and collaboration.
By implementing flexible seating, my students will be comfortable in their learning environment, and will be even more ready to learn! I have been researching flexible seating and have seen it in action, and it is my dream to make flexible seating happen for my students. I truly need your support to make my dream a reality.
