My 3rd grade inclusion classroom includes students that range from special needs such as Autism and ADHD to gifted students. Due to such different needs we are very busy with many transitions and movement throughout the day. Our classroom is bustling with creativity, higher level thinking, and collaboration.
My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and bring a large range of prior knowledge into our classroom.
The students range from a kindergarten reading level up to a high school reading level. In order to foster their differences we do a lot of problem based learning, collaboration, and hands-on activities in all content areas.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of seating options to provide the students in my classroom flexible choices and to allow them to learn in the environment that best suits their personal needs and wants. My classroom promotes a high level of responsibility and I feel it's very important for students to take charge of their own learning.
We do a lot of problem based learning, hands-on projects, and collaborating in my classroom.
We are constantly moving around and interacting for small group, whole group, and partner work. By removing many of our current desks and tables and replacing them with alternative seating choices this will allow for a safe and conducive working environment.
Research shows that sitting in traditional chairs and desks is not only harmful to a child's spine but it also doesn't allow all children to engage in meaningful learning experiences. Allowing them options such as stability balls, stools, and beanbag chairs will facilitate their learning and allow them to make responsible choices to take charge of their own learning.
This project will benefit my students by allowing them to be safe and comfortable while learning. In turn, they will be more engaged and willing to participate in classwork. This will improve their education and social skills due to the high level of collaboration and ownership in their learning.
