Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an urban, low-income community school with over 500 students. Many of our students come from high poverty homes. Students come from many diverse backgrounds and include a large amount of English as a second language students. We are a Title I school and all of our students qualify for free and reduced priced lunch. Despite the challenges they face outside of school, students come to our school excited to learn and need the tools that will help them reach their goals. As an educator, I focus on creating a community in my classroom where students feel safe, secure, and motivated to learn.
My Project
In my classroom I love to keep my students engaged in their learning. While working in groups, students are often moving around and our chairs often become very distracting with the loud sound they make when moving. A few of my students do have accommodations to help improve their focus and this does not help. To make matters worse, our classroom is located above a preschool classroom that takes naps in the middle of their day. Moving our chairs in any way often wakes up those students. I am asking for chair socks for our desk chairs to help reduce the noise and improve focus in my classroom.
Focus is key to our classroom success.
I am also asking for a chair for our students when they come up to the front of the room to share their thinking. This chair is higher up and will allow all students to see the speaker and hear the speaker with more of a focused lens.
