I teach chemistry to 11th graders at an under-served, high-need urban high school. Our school is fairly new and I am teaching what will be the first graduating class; thus this is our first year offering chemistry.

Since this is the first year of chemistry, our school has not adequately prepared our class with all the supplies we need to focus on chemistry learning. More specifically, the science department does not have access to the scientific calculators that are necessary for success in performing stoichiometry problems. Instead of learning the stoichiometry skills, my students (who I have asked several times to acquire calculators) spend crucial learning time performing arithmetic operations.

If we had a class set of 30 scientific calculators, we would be able to focus our brain power and learning time on chemistry concepts not math concepts that have been mastered previously. With our stoichiometry skills mastered, my students will then have more time to explore the application of stoichiometry. Specifically, I would like my students to analyze various methods of alternative fuel production and/or carbon dioxide reduction and evaluate what method has the highest efficacy.

Your help will ensure that my students focus on stoichiometry, not arithmetic. This basic understanding is necessary for any of my students to have a fighting chance at a college level chemistry course or furthermore a future in a science, technology, engineering, or medicine related field. On a more immediate level, with these resources I will be able to implement an exciting unit that focuses on the importance of stoichiometry calculations in real-life problems. This real world connection will cement this knowledge into my students' minds.
