Our elementary school has a large population of students with special needs. I teach a self-contained unit for students with autism and developmental delays. Not only do our students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, but one-third of our students with special needs are also nonverbal.
Our parents work hard to provide the basic necessities for their children, but many times children with special needs have additional expenses such as medical, speech therapy and occupational therapy.
After paying for medical, food, housing and clothing, there is not much left for school supplies. If it were not for a couple of churches providing school supplies, our class would not have very much.
My Project
School can be stressful enough for students without having to worry about having basic school supplies. These supplies will allow my students to concentrate on their academics without worrying about if they have the right type of pencil, paper or notebook.
Students worry about having the "right" school supplies because they want to be just like their peers.
My students need alot of visual support so cardstock and velcro are very important in my classroom. Most of my students have difficulty writing. so I am always trying to find pencil grips that will give them proper support. These supplies are greatly needed!
