Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my school are consistently eager to learn and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities, despite the challenges that they face outside of the classroom. Our students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of immigrant families. Many of our students speak a language other than English at home.
A number of our students experience being homeless due to a variety of factors--factors which are certainly well beyond their control.
Despite the difficult circumstances that they are experiencing, these students try their best to maintain their enthusiasm, their effort, and their resiliency when they come to school. We need to do whatever we can to help keep their spirits up and meet their basic needs so that they can continue to learn and grow, and feel safe.
My Project
In our elementary school complex, we currently have about 350 students experiencing homelessness. These children and their families require our support in order to be able to continue to attend school and maintain a sense of routine despite their difficult circumstances. One small way in which we can give that support is by providing some of the essential items for these children and their families.
Our elementary parent liaison has set up a resource closet in our elementary school complex, where we maintain a store of clothing and necessities--such as new underwear and socks, towels and washcloths, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste--for families in need of support.
Students and families who are experiencing homelessness can come in or ask for the items they need. Teachers and social workers who identify specific needs can retrieve needed items from the closet to give to students. We would like to see this closet filled up for the start of the school year so that these students can be healthy and safe, and to provide their families with some relief.
By making it a bit easier for students in these situations to maintain good health and hygiene habits, we can relieve their families of this worry and make it possible for students to be able to focus more on their academics and "being kids" while at school.
