Help me give my students 16 handpicked books and graphic novels for my classroom library. These books were specifically chosen for being diverse, high-interest, and culturally relevant.
I am incredibly lucky to teach at a diverse public middle school in Kentucky where I was also once a student. In order to bridge the extensive grade level reading gap many of my students come to our school with, I provide ten minutes of structured independent reading time in class for my students to read a book of their choosing.
In my classroom, these students have the opportunity to pause and take a break from the chaos and stress of growing up in low-income households and simply enjoy beautifully written words that can take them to places that many of them have never imagined before.
My Project
My project includes both novels and graphic novels for our classroom library. These books have been selected from the Project Lit Community, which is a national, grassroots Literacy movement, a network of dedicated teachers and students who are committed to increasing access to culturally relevant books and promoting a love of reading in our schools and communities.
My goal as an educator is not just to foster a love of reading, but to increase my students' access to high quality and culturally relevant books.
Many of our students come from families without extra income to spend on books, so I am starting this project to get high interest, culturally-relevant books in our students' hands. The books on this project are the ones left that I have not already purchased for my classroom library myself.
All students deserve to see themselves in the pages of a story.
