My Gifted and Talented classroom is full of motivated young minds. In my classroom, I serve sixty-one 2nd - 5th grade students. We are passionate for learning. My students are always ready to meet a challenge head on.
I specialize in serving identified Gifted and Talented students for 150 minutes a week at a Title I school in which we focus on various tasks centered around rigor and creativity, and I carefully plan authentic student-selected activities that are engaging, meaningful and challenging.
My students are critical thinkers, and I am always looking for ways to mold them into innovative thinkers. My groups are clustered homogeneously in order to better compact learning for gifted students whose abilities exceed peers within the same chronological age.
My students are self-starters, and they are committed to accomplishing tasks that some learners shy away from given the rigor of the task. It is my goal to implement challenging curriculum because I know that my ultimate goal in school is to prepare my kids to be college or career ready. By immersing these young students into authentic learning experiences designed to enhance ingenuity and creativity, they have an opportunity to visualize complex concepts like never before.
My Project
My 4th grade GT students have already had 2 years learning and studying the basics of Economics. With enough background knowledge to be proficient, they are ready to advance to the next step and apply what they have learned in a real world situation: the Stock Market Game.
I am seeking funding to allow 10 teams of 4th grade students plunge head-first into learning about stocks, mutual funds, and bonds.
Through this project, my kids will have the opportunity to learn to invest in their future by becoming smart consumers! They will likely learn about risk and reward, cost and benefits, and they will also learn about the volatility of investing. There is so much value in kids having the opportunity to track stocks, recognize trends, analyze statistics, predict market high/lows as they stay abreast of current events. We will explore diversification and consider risk versus reward as we plunge into the market. The students will also become familiar with statewide companies who boost our local economy, and they will begin to understand the benefits, the trade offs, and the risks of personal investment.
We are fortunate enough to have the use of one to one technology in our classroom, and the kids have had extensive training on conducting independent research. We live in a country where the value of a dollar is not readily understood by our youth.
I believe that our students will begin to understand how quickly money is earned and how quickly it can be depleted depending on investments they make. Investment takes self-discipline, sacrifice, and perseverance. Each one of my students will benefit from learning about how to make life better for their future.
