All teachers are special. Special education teachers have extra special needs for their students. My students aren't conventional learners. I teach a variety of students with a variety of different learning disabilities. Some verbal, some non-verbal, but not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say! It is important to understand each individual and how differently each learns. I create personalized lesson plans assessing the needs of each individual so each student can thrive and reach their maximum growth potential.
My Project
Providing my students opportunities to actively use their senses as they explore their world through ‘sensory play’ is crucial to brain development. This leads to a child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks and supports cognitive growth, language development, gross motor skills, social interaction, and problem-solving skills. Sensory activities facilitate exploration and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate, and explore. The sensory activities allow children to refine their thresholds for different sensory information helping their brain to create stronger connections to process and respond to sensory information.
My students benefit greatly from sensory play, and these materials will allow them to explore ELA and MATH in a hands-on, fun sensory way!
For example, whether digging for shapes or searching for items they find in nature, the possibilities are endless.
