Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an inner city school with 90% of the students being from low income families and 74% learning English for the first time. Many students enter my classroom as reluctant readers as they have difficulty comprehending books written at their grade level.
It is my goal to provide an environment that inspires, challenges, encourages, and motivates students to reach their potential and become life long learners.
I believe fostering a love of reading will help me reach that goal.
My Project
Many students in my classroom are reading below grade level. Therefore, I am in need of quality lower level but high interest chapter books for students to use during daily independent reading time, and non fiction passages that can develop content area comprehension skills. In order for students to grow as a reader, they need to practice reading daily with books to fit their level. With these books I could also encourage partner reading and book clubs to encourage discussion.
I find many books written at the first and second grade level do not appeal to my struggling fourth graders.
