Can you imagine being a student 13 years into the new millennium, yet stuck with classroom computers that are over 10 years old?
Our school is a Title 1 school, and most of our students have no computers at home.
As my students head to the computers in my classroom to type their English essays, articles for our school newspaper or work on our online yearbook, I hear the familiar call, "Ms. Roth, the computer's frozen! The mouse won't move!" "Patience," I counsel, all the while silently pulling my hair out with frustration.
My Project
Through the generosity of givers on DonorsChoose.org, we received a Chromebook in December. Even with one new computer, we could suddenly move mountains! Our 10 year old computers are so slow and glitchy, we practically weep with frustration at trying to get anything done, even as we do our best to incorporate technology in the classroom. One more inexpensive, yet smooth working and practical Chromebook will allow more productivity among my 160 students, than using the 10 old clunker computers we have now. In addition, as of April 8th, our XP IBM's will no longer be updated. Yep. Dead and gone. Kaput. Obsolete.
I have seen the pride my students feel when using modern equipment - which frankly gives them more incentive to work.
Finally, if we intend to prepare our students for the future, they need to use modern computers and the multitude of programs available to them online. Thank you for helping propel us into the 21st Century!
