Still Coping with Life! Handling Adversity Without Aggression!
Help me give my students the tools for their toolbox in order to participate in groups with and deal with their anger and frustration in positive ways.
I teach a classroom of wonderful students who struggle from time to time in finding the appropriate way to respond to situations which anger or frustrate them. In my classroom, we really try to work on teaching, and using strategies to cope with times in our life that are challenging. My students continuously surprise me on a daily basis with their charm, wit, humor, and courteous nature.
Everybody gets angry and frustrated occasionally, but not all of us have the skills to effectively, and safely, cope with those feelings.
The students that I teach need a little bit of extra guidance in this area, and I am always looking for extra resources that not only effectively teach these skills, but that are interesting for them. There are some students who are great people, but just haven't been taught a safe and responsible way to handle problems that come at them, and those are my students.
I thoroughly enjoy my job, and the reason for that is because of the students that I get to work with on a daily basis.
My Project
My students will directly use the materials and gain a way, with your help, to learn to form positive and meaningful relationships with their typically developing peers, as well as be able to handle the curve balls that life throws us without being unsafe, disrespectful, or hurtful toward themselves and others. My students will use and get a lot out of these resources. They will be able to use these resources to get a better understanding of replacement behaviors when they are upset and frustrated. All of the students on my caseload will be able to use and interact with these books and lessons in order to put more tools in their toolbox to be able to deal with life on life's terms.
Their anger and frustration can sometimes manifest itself in extreme responses to ordinary situations.
Their response to adversity can sometimes be unsafe and they will be able to interact with theses materials in order to get different ways to handle that adversity in more pro-social ways. These books that I am hoping to get funded are books that my students will be able to utilize in order to gain access to more self-control techniques and get a better understanding of why they get so upset. Another side-benefit to these books that they would be using would be that it would give my students more opportunities to form relationships with typically developing peers that might hopefully carry on through their education careers and beyond.
