Our Kindergartners reflect the world. We are composed of many types of learners. Some of which are refugees fleeing religious persecution. Our class motto is written, as follows: It is not about me; it is not about you; it is about us. We hold fast to the belief that everyone, even teachers, should never stop learning. Therefore, we strive to be a model for other students to follow inside and outside of the classroom.
Through thoughtful reflection, teaching with compassion, empathy, and sincere enthusiasm, our goal is to be transformed into autonomous learners.
My Project
In the interest of maintaining a safe learning environment, these materials can help enhance our Kindergarten day. They will be shared among 3 different classrooms to maximize the utilization of space and bring difficult math concepts to life. Therefore, we are in need of math manipulatives (called Rekenreks, aka abacus) and a large rug to fit all the students during the school day.
There is a lot that school asks of the Kindergarten students during their first year in a formal classroom setting.
Having a large rug is essential to the organization and safety of the class. The chosen rug has "sit-spots" located on it that provide for easily behavioral management. Each "sit-spot" is the just right distance between Kinders so that they can keep their hands and feet to themselves.
Additionally, the math manipulatives can be used whole/small group to make mathematical concepts more concrete. Rekenreks foster the development of number sense in these early years of schooling.
