My Students
The moment my students walk through my classroom door, they are ready to get to work. I say, "Are you ready to rock?" and they respond with, "Ready to roll!" I expect nothing but the best from them, and I strive to be the best teacher and provide the best classroom environment I can.
My school serves Latino, Polynesian, and African-American students who live in deep poverty.
These are amazing students, full of life and character, who deserve nothing but the best. Most live in unfortunate situations at home; therefore, the classroom must be anything but unfortunate. I strive to make sure my students have all that they need to be successful in their academics.
My Project
My students spend close to seven hours at school in our classroom. We are a self-contained fifth grade classroom where I teach all of the main content areas from reading and writing to math and history. All the materials that come with each content area are multiplied by 32 students. My students have a lot of "stuff" needed to learn, but they lack appropriate space to store it. I am training my students to be ready for middle school, and organization is key. The idea is that each child will have a file cabinet drawer to neatly store away the items not currently needed, keeping them safe until needed, very much like the lockers they will have in middle school and high school.
Every Friday, I am training my students to be able to run a mile which is a requirement for middle school and beyond.
At times, my students are not ready for running because they have simply forgotten to bring the right shoes. Running in flats or boots is just out of the question. If each child had a file drawer to use as a "locker" in which to store their running shoes, they would be ready whenever we choose to run.
The file cabinet drawer that each student will be assigned will act as a "locker," much as in high school, to properly store in an organized fashion all the materials from math books to running shoes needed for a seven-hour day spent in a self-contained classroom. My goal is to have eight four drawer file cabinets, allowing 32 students to each get their own "locker." In funding this project, we will obtain two more file drawers, enough for eight more of my thirty-two students to have their very own space to store their materials.
