So many of the behavior problems we face as teachers is when students do not have enough to keep them busy. Being short of supplies for a project creates much waiting time and turns a fun, educational experiences into a frustrating experience. An engaged student is a better learner for all!
I work in an urban, public school in San Francisco.
Many of the students live in households where there is not a lot of expendable income. With budget cuts, I have received a zero budget for supplies in my classroom and most of my families are not in a position to help out. I have several students who struggle with learning through traditional methods and are very successful with hands on activities (kinesthetic learners). I have worked hard to tailor my lessons to include all kinds of learners and create opportunities for all students. An important way to avoid the frustration and behavior issues is to make sure there are enough tools and supplies for students to be busy. It is so rewarding to see all students involved in their education and feeling proud of their efforts.
My Project
We are needing glue, glue guns and glue sticks for a history diorama project. Also, by funding the dry erase markers we can complete the animation project we are 3/4 of the way through. There are so many giggles and thrills being shared with the students as they download their images and share their efforts. They are feeling successful, smart and engaged. We are learning so much through the process and some of the students are discussing careers they are interested in because they feel they can do things they never believed they could. The supplies you help fund will help these students to continue to unlock their amazing, beautiful talents and carry that self worth with them.

The supplies you would help purchase will allow us to complete to arts integrated hands-on activities that reinforce the history and language arts we are working on in class. These well deserving students will enjoy having the materials necessary to freely create, explore and stay on-task with their learning. It's an opportunity for students to investigate new mediums and have a greater scope of their own options and possibilities.
